  • SERVING RECOMMENDATION: coup or martini glass, garnish with a lime or grapefruit wedge or wheel perched on the rim
  • BACKGROUND: The Cosmopolitan is a simple cocktail with a complicated origin. Though made most popular in the 1990s by the HBO show ‘Sex and the City,’ the cocktail actually made its debut a decade earlier and quickly became a favorite on everyone’s lips.

While every bar served the cocktail, many bartenders are still in disagreement on who created the original recipe. Below are JUST A FEW of the proclamations:

  • CLAIM ONE: The original Cosmopolitan was created in 1975 at Cork n’ Cleaver in Minneapolis by Neal Murray. In fact, his first customer of the cocktail exclaimed, ‘how cosmopolitan,’ and the name stuck.
  • CLAIM TWO: The original Cosmopolitan was created in 1985 in South Beach, Miami at the Strand by Cheryl Cook by altering the classic kamikaze cocktail in an attempt to create a new cocktail for the martini glass.
  • CLAIM THREE: The Cosmopolitan, which we know and love today, was created in 1987 in New York at Odeon by Toby Cecchini after tasting Cheryl Cook’s cocktail and altering it to include fresh lime juice.

For our recipe, we created a grapefruit vodka to gain the right tart yet sweet combination of the rosy-hued cocktail.
